Do you suffer from dental anxiety or phobias? Do you fear visiting the dentist? You’re not alone – approximately 20% of our population experiences some degree of dental anxiety and phobias. This may be due to a previous experience, medical or financial reasons, or simply because you’ve never seen a dentist before!
Regardless of your reasons for being afraid of visiting the dentist, we treat each and every patient as an individual and work WITH YOU to determine the best treatment options. We will work very hard to help you overcome your anxiety and phobias, to ensure your smile is taken care of and as sparkly as can be.
Our Treatment to Minimise Your Dental Anxiety and Phobias
Our clinic is not a typical dental clinic. We provide a calming, holistic and homely environment. It is our aim to assist you in overcoming your dental fear, anxiety or phobia in whatever way is best for you. We have successfully treated patients who previously have required general anaesthetics to have their dental treatment. With our approach, using cognitive behaviour therapy methods and mild sedation adjuncts techniques, these same patients are now able to avoid hospitalisation and manage to receive treatment in the dental chair. As a result of our approach, they are much calmer, more relaxed and 100% confident that their dental treatment will be fine.
We use a variety of treatments to minimise dental anxiety and phobias, including:
- Nitrous oxide gas
- Premedication using relaxants
- Concentrated topical anaesthetic gels
- Lasers
What Causes Dental Anxiety and Phobias
DENTAL FEAR: This is the typical ‘fight or flight response’. You may have had dental treatment previously and it has ‘hurt’, so you feel you know what will occur. You feel there is nowhere to escape and no one listening to your concerns. We avoid dental fear at all costs—patients should never feel pain while receiving any kind of dental treatment.
DENTAL ANXIETY: Is the fear of having an ‘unknown’ treatment which develops into anxiety. If your dental treatment is a new experience, then you may have some anxiety about the mere thought of the treatment, until you have experienced it first hand and know that you are ‘OK’.
DENTAL PHOBIA: You are so scared of receiving dental treatment that it makes you feel ‘sick’. You have had a very negative experience, which initially created dental fear that has now grown into dental Phobia. Patients who have dental phobia will avoid the dentist at all costs until they must have treatment, or they physiological burden of the phobia becomes overwhelming.
Our aim is to help prevent reaching this stage. We want to reverse the feeling of being ‘crippled’ with fear and to know that there are processes and techniques to beat all these phobias and anxieties.
