1. What causes tooth discolouration?
Teeth can be naturally yellow –this discolouration can occur from natural development i.e. it’s in your genes! Other external factors include: smoking, coffee and tea, red wine and generally all food and drinks with colour. Consumption of certain antibiotics during tooth formation or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discolouration
2. What does the in-chair whitening treatment involve?
Usually a very relaxed session with us! Our dental Therapist will make you comfortable, take some impressions and prepare your teeth for the whitening. Treatment times vary between 30 minutes and 1 hour with all treatments being one off procedures and will leave you walking out the door with a whiter brighter smile.
3. How long will the results last?
We ask that you follow our simple post whitening care instructions. By doing these simple procedures it is a common expectation that will see results lasting for 3-5 years. To keep your teeth looking their best we recommend flossing, brushing twice a day and using our maintenance kit every 3-6 months.
4. How safe is professional whitening and who performs the whitening?
There is absolutely no enamel damage when whitening teeth professionally. When done in the hands of a qualified dentally trained person extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening is considered the safest and most economical cosmetic dental procedure available.
5. Are there any side effects?
There can be a feeling sometimes of minimal heat. This is the usual cause of discomfort. On rare occasions tingling or sensitivity during and after may occur with some patients. On average 90% of patients experience no discomfort. We strongly recommend the use of Tooth Mousse for a week or two leading up to your appointment if you suspect or suffer from sensitive teeth you may wish to use
6. What is Tooth Mousse?
Tooth Mousse is a topically applied great tasting cream that has two very powerful and tooth protecting ingredients: fluoride and milk-derived protein, which binds calcium and phosphate to strengthen the tooth’s surface. Tooth Mousse is especially effective before for sensitive teeth and after as enamel pores are open therefore greater absorption with faster effectiveness
7. Do the teeth look unusual after the treatment? How white will they go?
No. you will never walk out the door glowing in the dark. Teeth Whitening will only give you a nice natural looking white tooth colour. Depending on the shade of the teeth to start with will depend on how far your teeth will whiten. Generally we get patients to a shade B1.
8. Do I need maintenance trays?
With all of our in-chair whitening systems you will receive take home maintenance trays as well as whitening gel and instructions. These trays can be used to maximize results or just as “top up” maintenance every few months. It’s completely up to you. These are completely complementary and free of charge
9. Common post whitening instructions:
It is advised to stay away from coloured food such as red wine, curry, coffee, cola, dark sauces, berries etc. for 3 days after the whitening treatment. After the 72 hours you can continue with your usual diet.
