Cusp Capping

cusp cappingCusp capping is the process of using composite fillings to replace the cusps in teeth. A cusp is a hard protrusion on a tooth. The cusp sits higher than the rest of the tooth and therefore is the first point of contact when biting. Canine teeth have one cusp, premolars have two cusps and molars typically have four to five cusps.

Cusps typically need to be capped or replaced as a result of decay and cavities or as a result of dental trauma, such as tooth fracture. Cusp capping can also be used to strengthen severely damaged teeth, teeth with poor pulpal health and can even act as a foundation for the fitting of crowns.

This procedure is effective in restoring the structure of damaged teeth and in providing support for the application of fillings to other areas of the teeth.

Our Procedure for Cusp Capping

Our holistic approach to dentistry means we take a range of factors into account before deciding on a treatment plan. Each cusp capping treatment will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of our patients.

An example of a cusp capping treatment plan:

  1. Initial consultation session will communicate the aims of the cusp capping procedure and the results you can expect. We will run through the procedure and aim to create a procedure plan that takes into account any fears or concerns you may have.
  2. After examining your teeth we will decide if a pin retention treatment needs to accompany the cusp capping treatment.
  3. You will be given local anesthetic to numb the area and prevent pain. If you have raised any fears about the procedure we can also administer some other medications and techniques to make the experience far more pleasant.
  4. The sections of the cusps that have cavities or are damaged will be removed. The reduction of the cusps is done to ensure the capping creates uniformity across the surface of the teeth.
  5. If pin retention is required the pin will be inserted into the dentin. The composite filling will then be constructed around the pin or on the prepared surface.
  6. You will be given an at-home treatment plan that will help you in looking after you teeth and a follow-up session will be booked to monitor the health of the tooth.

Why Have a Cusp Capping Procedure

Cusp capping is an effective and cheaper alternative to other tooth restoration procedures such as crowns. The treatment can restore the structure and functionality of your tooth and it only takes on procedure and a possible follow-up procedure compared to the three procedures that crowns and dental implants take.

Cusps are important in preserving your teeth and the decision to have them capped could save you from having to get them removed further down the track. So a cusp capping treatment can save your teeth and save you a lot of time and money.
